Run, Sing, Drink… or just Support - October 23-24, 2010
ClearWater’s largest fundraising activities to date. Run, Sing, Drink. It’s just that simple. Three activities beginning on October 23rd and culminating in a run on October 24th in Washington, D.C. All geared for fun and fundraising.
Run. Team ClearWater has over 21 runners participating in the Army Ten-Miler on Sunday, October 24th. Each participant is raising funds to benefit those we serve. Please support our runners through tax-deductible donations on Crowdrise. If you’re in the DC area, come and cheer our runners on during the race. For more info on the race please go to armytenmiler.com.
Sing. Guster, an alternative rock band known for its live performances, humor and eco-activism, was formed at Tufts University. Guster has partnered with ClearWater for their Saturday, October 23rd show at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., with a special ticket package including a meet-and-greet with the band after the show! They have also donated all proceeds from these specially priced $125 tickets to ClearWater. To purchase tickets click here. Guster’s new album, Easy Wonderful, is available October 5th. Get a free download of “Bad Bad World” from the new album on their webpage
Drink. On October 23rd, ClearWater’s D.C. supporters are getting together as a community. Come for the drinks, come for the food, come for the camaraderie. But make sure to come and support. Details on the gathering will soon be released.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 and bring awareness of our new status as a participating charity in the Combined Federal Campaign Charity. For those who work for the federal government, this enables you to donate pre-tax dollars during this year’s CFC election season directly to ClearWater simply by selecting charity #59824.
Above all, this weekend is also special because the activities truly reflect the spirit of our founder, Ben Sklaver, who had his roots in both Tufts and the Army and was always a fan of sharing a good beer with friends. The funds raised will help ClearWater purchase a vehicle in Uganda, ultimately lowering our largest project expense - transportation. Due to our reliance on unreliable rental and inefficient vehicles, we are spending more than we’d like to simply reach remote Ugandan villages. These costs ultimately detract from our ability to spend critical resources on training and the digging of wells to develop clean water solutions. We hope that you will choose to generously support ClearWater and join us for a fun-filled and exciting weekend.

Kitgum High School Cafeteria Dedication - August 10, 2010Our founder, Ben Sklaver, was honored in Uganda with the dedication of the Kitgum High School Cafeteria. A four-member ClearWater delegation watched as the government of Kitgum District, the US Ambassador to Uganda and US Army Brigadier General James Owens - a former superior of Ben's - cut the ribbon on the joint USAID/US military civil affairs project.
The ceremony was a well attended and fitting honor to Ben’s work, with speakers and friends from all walks coming to show their appreciation. Chairman of Kitgum Komakech was taken by his legacy, calling him a "simple and humble man," who "demystified a lot about the US Army," creating a positive image. Resident District Commissioner of Kitgum Omony Ogaba hoped that "Ben's spirit may empower others who use this facility to strive for lasting peace."
The cafeteria itself was smartly appointed, with sturdy tables (unfamiliar to most dining halls there), a shiny brick floor and a new cookery. In addition, renovations will even allow the building to double as the school’s auditorium. Meals at the Sklaver Cafeteria will remain simple – rice, beans, boo and malakwang – but its completion will provide new opportunities for the children of Kitgum The event and effort were a strong show of commitment from the U.S. to education and the people of Northern Uganda. "These combined efforts,” said Jerry Lanier, “show the Ugandan people that peace is here and together we will build a brighter future.”

Greg Schulzie Invitational - April 10, 2010Greg Schulzie, one of our strongest supporters, hosted the 11th annual Schulzie Golf Invitational and Fundraiser in Atlanta and donated ClearWater all the tourney proceeds for a second year. Over 65 golfers and one giant chicken with a mean drive took up their clubs to benefit ClearWater’s efforts in Uganda at the Charlie Yates Golf Course. This year’s invitational raised roughly $3000. Thanks to all that participated.
We the Kings Benefit Concert - April 8, 2010 Over 400 people came out to Toad's Place in New Haven, CT to hear We The Kings play a benefit concert for ClearWater. The show was a huge success raising over $11,000. Special thanks to KC101.3 FM for all their promotional support, to Toad's Place for graciously donating the venue, and We The Kings for donating their time, travel and proceeds from the merchandise sales.
The line of fans that started forming in the mid-afternoon was an incredible sight to see as they were so excited to attend a special VIP pre-show event with We The Kings. Travis and Hunter played two songs off their new album, Smile Kid, for an exclusive group of 100 fans, followed by a meet-and-greet and pizza dinner from Yorkside Restaurant.
John Mayer of KC101 hosted the evening, which started with a rousing performance by a band from Quinnipiac University, Voted Most Random. After their set ended, Glastonbury High School presented a check for $4,500! The students selected ClearWater to be the beneficiary of the Key Club's annual Rock-A-Thon.
We The Kings then took the stage for an acoustic peformance, including bringing a fan on stage to sing with them and giving away an autographed guitar. Hunter and Travis made a special effort to connect with the fans and explain their interest in ClearWater and the importance of giving back.
The night didn't end there as Modern Hearts Break Faster took the stage for an awesome performance.
Thank you to all the fans and supporters, our volunteers and sponsors for making the benefit concert our largest fundraiser to date!
